Mixer 2.0: Cocktail Night with Hitachi Data Systems, Arcscale, and Web 2.0 companies (and about hosting a Lunch 2.0 yourself)

Filed under: Silicon Valley, announcement, hitachi, lunch 2.0, random — tychay @ 2:35 am

If there is one event last year that representing the “tipping point” for Lunch 2.0, it had to be last year’s Web 2.0 Expo at Hitachi Data System. (My personal tipping point was the first time my Lunch 2.0 was paid for. Thank’s Dave! :-D ) The video Holly took of the Hitachi’s blowout never ceases to impress:

This year, they’re taking it in a different direction by inviting all Web 2.0 companies to MIXER 2.0: A meet and greet cocktail night with appetizers and drinks!

Hosts: Hitachi Data Systems and Arcscale
Location: The Blue Chalk Café
Address: 630 Ramona St, Palo Alto, CA, 94301
Date: Thursday July 26, 2007, 6:00-8:00PM
RSVP on SeeUThere (by July 24th)

PodShow and quigo will be special guests there!

It’s hard to believe it’s been less than a year since Jeremiah organized the Hitachi Lunch 2.0. And finally, he’s written down some Lunch 2.0 hosting tips he’s learned from that experience and being a tireless promoter of our events in in this must-read article.

Jeremiah writes:

“The Lunch 2.0 phenomenon is taking off, it’s spread to Seattle, and will spread to other areas in the United States, and then maybe global.…The modern Community Event is like a tupperware party. A genuine host caters and has real conversations in a laid back style, while the brand is gently present during the event…By giving, we were able to get more.

Community events…we at Lunch 2.0 love the idea, which is why we’ve been big fans of Women 2.0 and Silicon Valley Web Builder (as well as avidly follow bub.blicio.us).

Show that the power of it extends far beyond the lunch by attending Hitachi’s MIXER 2.0.

Edit: Oh, did I forget to mention that all attendants can also pre-register for MIXER 2.0’s raffle for an iPhone? Bah. Who wants that crap anyways? Damn you, Steve Jobs! :-D

Edit: For you event whores, here is the Upcoming link.

How do you wrap up something like this?!

Here are some sites and sounds of those who missed the event. Thanks again Hitachi & Jeremiah!
Note: The view counter is broken for now, but it’s still keeping the count. I’m told it will be turned back on in the next few weeks.

Wow! This event WAS a blowout. Hitachi Data Systems (If you need Data Storage) was very happy to host the web community, there was a reported 200-250 folks that came out to the hi-tech headquarters in Santa Clara. Rather than rave about this event, this post will serve as an index of all the voices of the attendees!

Reminder: Lunch 2.0 ‘Web Expo’ this Tuesday at Hitachi Data Systems

Filed under: hitachi, lunch 2.0 — jeremiah @ 7:28 am

The first ever Lunch 2.0 “Web Expo” blowout is coming this Tuesday, Sept 12th from 11:30-2:00 at Hitachi Data Systems in Santa Clara. You’ll be encouraged to eat as much as you can “store” while meeting ten data-intensive companies showing their stuff. Relax as Pandora Dj’s the event and school your friends on a variety of games to play. Sign up here, or risk missing out:

It’s bound to be an international affair since signups are already coming in from folks as far away as Ireland, United Kingdom, Japan, and Taiwan. The guest count could easily exceed 200 folks!

Many a luminary have helped spread the word, read what they wrote: Robert Scoble, Adam Darowski, Martin McKeay, Marc Cantor, Mario Sundar, Anil Gupta, Thomas Hawk, Damon Billian, Scott Beale, and the Zooomr gang. Last but not least, the host bloggers at Hitachi Data Systems are also helping to spread the news, such as CTO Hu Yoshida, Chris Salazar, Julio Garcia, and Community Manager Jeremiah Owyang.

See you there!

“Subversive” Lunch 2.0 Heralds the Web 2.0 Backlash

Filed under: lunch 2.0, news, random — jsmarr @ 10:57 am

Jeremiah (host of the upcoming Lunch 2.0 Web Expo Blowout at Hitachi Data Systems) just pointed me to an article in The Register about Tim Berners-Lee complaining that “Web 2.0″ is all hype and nothing new. As evidence that the “2.0″ suffix has become trendy and meaningless, the author Gavin Clarke writes:

We have: SOA 2.0, enterprise 2.0, grid 2.0, VoIP 2.0, voice 2.0, BPM 2.0, Office 2.0 and – outside of pure technology – advertising 2.0 and marketing 2.0 (both – naturally – taking advantage of Web 2.0’s social networking technologies), business development 2.0 and – subverting the genre – hidsight 2.0 and lunch 2.0.

I don’t know what to be prouder of–the fact that we were included in this article, or that we’re apparently “subverting the genre”! :)

But actually, when I think about it, Lunch 2.0 really does embody a lot of what (with all due respect to Sir Berners-Lee) makes Web 2.0 special: connecting people to people (meeting fellow valley folk and seeing how they work), user-generated content (all of the work is done by companies choosing to host lunch 2.0 events–they even write the announcements!), and customers as active participants (if you didn’t come to lunch 2.0, it wouldn’t exist, and it certainly wouldn’t be as fun and colorful as you always make it!). So in response to Mr. Clarke, I’d say if anything, we exemplify the genre!

Thanks to you all for making lunch 2.0 what it is, and regardless of what happens to web 2.0, we’re here to stay!

For companies wanting to show off their site, this is a free, prime opportunity! Hitachi Data Systems will provide the location, (see this picture–it can fit hundreds) tables, chairs, internet LAN connections, and power for these companies. All you need to do is send an email to (jeremiah_owyang@yahoo.com) describing your website, and what your web company does. The focus for the expo is on companies that store large amounts of data (we’re at Hitachi Data Systems, after all!). No cost to be presenter. And did I mention it’s free?
