Lunchzilla 2.1: Lunch 2.0 @ Mozilla

Filed under: Silicon Valley, announcement, lunch 2.0, mozilla — tychay @ 3:53 pm

Seems like many (internet) years since we’ve last hit us our favorite lizard up for some food as conversation? (pix and vid). Can you believe back then we were talking about the Firefox 2.0 beta?

Hosts: Mozilla
Address: Building K, 1981 Landings Drive, Mountain View
Date: Tuesday December 4, 2007 noon-1:30pm
RSVP on Upcoming.org

Swing by the home-office on Dec. 4th to find out what they’ve been been working on for the next versions of Firefox. You’ll get a chance to meet with Mozilla Engineers, sample some of Mountain View’s finest pizza, and listen to their administrative overhead (Vice President of Engineering) discuss the future of Mozilla (Mobile, Off-Line Apps, JavaScript 2).

First 100 people get all the free pizza and software they can handle. :-)

Host: TheWhole9.com (Which happens to work out of a beautiful art gallery!)

When: Friday, December, 7 12:05 – 2:00 PM

Where: Culver City, CA

RSVP:  RSVP Here

TheWhole9.com is a social networking site for creative professionals and artists. They operate out of a beautiful art gallery in Culver City. That means, in addition to the usual connections and conversations, we’ll get to have lunch (and wine) in wonderful surroundings.

If you’re in LA, check this event out. If not, please pass the word on to a friend in the area.

Oh, and we’re trying something new. Because the guest lists for the LA Lunch 2.0 events are getting huge, we’re trying to help this one stay smaller by focusing on guests who are bloggers and designers. (What do you think of that idea? Please email me: andrew[at]awarner[dot]com)

This Friday, meebo will open its doors for the first official meebo Dev Camp for developers and potential partners. At 12:00 PM, the company will host a Lunch 2.0 for all comers at meebo’s Mountain View office, located at 215 Castro Street, 3rd floor. When lunch concludes, those interested in the meebo Platform can stick around and work directly with meebo developers to begin creating synchronous applications – or put finishing touches on ones already in progress.

Additionally, meebo will offer virtual office hours to connect remote developers with the meebo team via video and audio calls. Interested? Email meeboplatform@meebo.com for more information. Developers of all kinds can learn more and register their application at meebo.com/platform. Applications are built on common open Web standards such as JavaScript and Flash.

Last week, meebo announced that more than 20 games are available to their users through the recently-launched meebo Platform. Since the October 30th Platform launch, more than 200 developers have registered applications for the meebo Platform and are working to make meebo the live interaction destination on the Web. Future categories of applications will include shopping, productivity and work applications, music and video entertainment.
Come for the food, stay for coding fun all night!

Oota 2.0 in news

Techies from the City got together over free lunch called Oota 2.0, a concept imported from Silicon Valley.

AS the techie community in Bangalore grows bigger and bigger, new ideas keep emerging to integrate the community further and get them talking. One such concept imported right from Silicon Valley is the Oota 2.0 launched recently by Opson Inc, a global career network site for techies.

The concept was evolved to get techies from different tech companies to come together and share their views at an informal gathering — over free lunch of course.

‘‘The concept first evolved in Silicon Valley, which has a large base of IT companies. It began there as an informal get-together for techies to eat and chat about the latest in the market,’’ says Rana Singh, CEO Opson Inc. He adds that it started as a prank in Silicon Valley with ‘geeks’ getting into a friend’s company to chow down other people’s food, but soon, the idea caught on and a loose-knit community started looking for free lunch and social interaction.

‘‘The concept in Silicon Valley is called Lunch 2.0 and is so popular that we have 9 chapters in the USA and chapters in Germany and Israel, so the concept has become extremely popular,’’ says Rana.

The first free lunch, sponsored by Opson Inc to celebrate its launch in Bangalore, was hosted recently, where a large group of techies gathered to interact, feast and make contacts. ‘‘It is a winwin situation from all sides,’’ says Rana.

‘‘The host company usually times the lunch in such a manner that they can showcase some new product, they are about to launch. This way, they get instant feedback from the industry. For the employees, it is an easy way to know the latest technology entering the industry, to make contacts, and to look out for job opportunities. Other employers, who gather at such meetings, get to scout for prospective employees, and share ideas.’’

The response so far has been encouraging, according to Rana and he is hoping that the concept will catch on. ‘‘We have taken the initiative by sponsoring the first lunch. Hopefully, other companies will take it forward so that it can become a regular affair,’’ he says.

‘‘Since the advantages are immense and many parent companies are already hosting these lunches in Silicon Valley as part of lunch 2.0, we expect good response for the concept in Bangalore,’’ he says.

Photos from LA Lunch 2.0 @ Business.com

Filed under: lunch 2.0 — Andrew Warner @ 5:41 pm

LA did its Lunch 2.0 @ Business.com today. You can see all the pictures I took in my Flickr set, but I thought I’d add some notes to a few to give you some context.

crowded.jpg

I think we had over 250 people show up. Most LA Internet companies don’t have enough space to host crowds this big. I think we’re going to have to cap the guest list in the future. (Hey Yahoo, I heard you have some space down here. How about holding a Lunch 2.0 at your Santa Monica or Burbank office soon?)

mtv.jpg

One of the reasons we’re getting so big is that once one person in a company comes to a Lunch 2.0, others from the company hear about it and start going to future events. I’m starting to see more and more people from MTV, like these two women…

dogs.jpg

…and Mahalo’s office must have cleared out today. I think I saw over a dozen people from their company. Here’s their CEO, Jason Calacanis, who even brought his two dogs. (Thank you Mark Jeffery from spreading the word at Mahalo.)
years.jpg

Most people come to Lunch 2.0 to make new connections, but these three old friends reconnected after years of not seeing each other.

Soon, I’ll post an invitation to the next Los Angeles Lunch 2.0. Until then I want to thank Nicole Jordon, Steve Morin, and Sonya Bhatia Patel for co-hosting with me (Andrew Warner). Thank you to everyone who reads this blog and invites their LA contacts to our events. And thank you Genevieve Crawford of business.com!

San Diego now has a growing Lunch 2.0 community too!

Filed under: lunch 2.0 — Andrew Warner @ 5:25 pm

I drove down to San Diego to help start Lunch 2.0 there. We had over 70 people show up. Also, 4 companies told me they wanted to do a future lunch at their offices, so it looks like Lunch 2.0 is firmly established in San Diego.

I created this animoto video of the event:

Lisa Brewster, Dan Tentler & I posted these pictures on flickr.Thank you goowy for inviting us in and launching this community in SD. Thank you Edward O’Connor for co-hosting with me (Andrew Warner).

We’re planning the next Lunch 2.0 in San Diego right now. Details on this blog, or you can request an invitation here.
